THE Wauchope Chamber of Commerce and Industry today launches a competition to design a series of flags for our main street.
The flags – about six in total – will hang from a number of street poles in High Street.
The decision by the chamber to go ahead with plans for the flags comes with its application to erect a banner across the main street.
That banner was last in place for Colonial Week.
Chamber’s CBD Master Plan spokesperson, Jenny Pursehouse, said the flags and banner will be part of a number of important improvements to the main street.
“While flags and banners in the main street is nothing new to regional Australia, they do create a bit of interest for passersby,” she said.
The chamber has thrown down the gauntlet to community groups, including local artists, local high school and primary schools, TAFE students, the arts community, the aboriginal community and service clubs, to come up with their own design for the flags.
“We are calling on these groups to come up with one design or a series of designs that will be used for the flags,” she said.
“The chamber believes the reflection of the community in the design will help create plenty of interest around town.
“The flags could also be changed throughout the seasons or they could be in place year round.
“The flags are 750mm wide by 4 metres in length and will be held in place by steel rods and a bracket system.
“Gordon Douglass from Wauchope Signs is involved in the process and he will provide assistance with design and creation of the flags.”
Mrs Pursehouse said she was looking forward to plenty of designs coming in over the next few weeks.
“It is probably best if the flags had minimal wording – even single wording – and were colourful … that would create the most appeal,” she said.
