THE Wauchope Poultry Club will hold its annual show on Sunday.
The event will be held at the Wauchope Showground in the Harley Cooke Pavilion.
Club president, Neil Coombes said the event will more than fill the shed.
“Entries closed on Tuesday, and we were well over the 560 maximum we can cater for,” he said.
“This year’s special breed of the show will be the Wyandotte. We select a different breed each year because it helps promote that breed at that particular show.
“The Harley Cooke Trophy will be presented to the best Wyandotte of the show.
“As well as the Wyandotte breed, we expect to see plenty of other breed of birds in all different shapes, sizes and colours at the show.”
Mr Coombes said the club continued to increase its membership – it has almost doubled in just a few years – with its emphasis on being family-oriented.
He said this was one of the club’s major strengths in attracting new members.
“We are a pretty well organized club and all our members take the time to exchange ideas and tips on their particular breeds,” he said.
“This not only helps us attract and maintain members, but also present good quality birds at each show we conduct.
“Our show is a great way to learn more about poultry and to maintain that quality of entry.”
Entries to this year’s show will travel from the Hunter Valley, Tamworth and north to Eungai, with more local entries from Taree, Wingham, Gloucester and, of course, Wauchope.
There will be considerable interest in the entry from the winners of the Bird Of Show at last year’s Sydney Royal this year, Mr Coombes said.
The show will be held on Sunday June 22 commencing at 8.30am sharp. Morning tea and lunch will be available at a small cost. There will be three judges from the north coast and one from the Hunter Valley in attendance.
Meanwhile Mr Coombes and fellow club member, Graham Cooke, attended the Maitland show on the weekend.
Mr Coombes won the large Rhode island section, the large White Leg Horn section, the best soft feature light breed and reserve champion soft feature large category. Out of the 12 birds taken to the show, Mr Coombes returned with 16 place cards.
Mr Cooke took out the Old English Game Pile champion in a good effort.
