Hollis returns to form for Dragons

19/06/2008 4:00:00 AM
LONG Flat frontrower, Keith Hollis was the stand out player in the Dragons’ 46-12 win over Beechwood in their Hastings League clash on Saturday.

Hollis was named the club’s players player for the day and picked up two points in the best and fairest award.

Hooker, Jason Costigan also played strongly and picked up the maximum points while fullback Angus Whitehead was also prominent for the Dragons and picked up one point.

Long Flat opened the scoring through five eighth Shane Franklin with a converted try after just five minutes and went further ahead in the 25th minute thanks to a Leith Costigan try.

Franklin could not add the extras leaving the score at 10-0.

Beechwood half back and captain coach Mark Williams got his team’s pointscoring underway with a try and when lock Tom Lawson converted the score was a reasonable 10-6.

But the Dragons picked up a gear late in the first half and went over for tries to second rower Steve Robb in the 31st minute and Jason Costigan in the 34th minute.

Franklin converted both tries for a half time score of 22-6.

Typically, the Dragons went on with the demolition job in the second half to eventually run away with the game but the Shamrocks were valiant in their efforts.

Dragons replacement Sean Christie was the first to add points in the second half with a try in the 42nd minute following by a second Jason Costigan touchdown. Franklin booted both conversions for a 34-6 scoreline.

Long Flat added a further two tries – to Whitehead in the 60th minute and halfback Reggie Martin 71st minute. Franklin was again on target and landed both conversions for the Dragons final points of the match.

Hardworking Beechwood front rower, Paul Roods got over the tryline for his team five minutes from full time and also booted the conversion for a final score of 46-12.

For the Dragons in defence, Reggie Martin, Angus Whitehead and Jason Morrison topped 20 tackles each while in the hit ups, Keith Hollis 19, Whitehead 16 and Nigel McKenna 15 were among the best.

For Beechwood, Wally Coombes picked up three points in the team’s best and fairest awards with two points to Ryan Saric and one point to Paul Roods.

Players player award was shared by Saric and Ahoy.

In the defence, Saric led the way with 25 along with Kurt Davis while Coombes recorded 24 tackles.

The Shamrocks take on the Tigers at Comboyne on Saturday with a bus leaving the Beechwood Hotel at noon and picking up at Wauchope at 12.15pm.
