Beechwood forces fifth spot playoff

8/07/2008 4:36:00 PM
BEECHWOOD defeated Port Boardriders 24-16 to force a play-off for fifth spot in the Hastings League after their match on Saturday.

The win pits the Shamrocks against the Boardies – due to be played last night – for the fifth position and a semi finals berth.

A win last night would be a tremendous boost to the Shamrocks who have battled hard all season despite a lack of player depth.

But if Saturday’s win is any guide, they would have given a stirring performance last night too.

The Shamrocks led last Saturday’s match 14-6 after Jamie Donovan opened the scoring in just the 5th minute with a great team. Amos Donovan failed with his conversion attempt.

But the Boardies took the lead five minutes later when George Jones scored a converted try to lead 6-4.

The Shamrocks then scored to tries – Ben Phillpott in the 19th minute which Donovan converted and a try to captain coach Mark Williams six minutes from the break to lead 14-6.

After the resumption, Beechwood pushed its lead to 20-6 when Todd Howe crossed for a try and Donovan booted the conversion.

The Boardies’ Denis Jones helped his side back into the contest when he scored a try and with Chris Dunn on target with the conversion to score was back to 20-12.

Ten minutes later Quintin Paine got over the tryline for the Shamrocks and although Donovan failed with the conversion the score looked to be comfortably in favour of Beechwood at 24-12.

In another late twist, James Dunn scored a try just three minutes from full time but could not add the extras leaving the score at 24-16.

In a desperate style of game, for the winners Todd Howe picked up the players player award while the Beechwood best and fairest points went to Ken McCrostie, Ben Forbes and Howe while the defence awards went to McCrostie, Forbes and Tom Lawson.
