Dragons record win for Martin's 200th game

3/07/2008 5:00:00 AM
LONG Flat defeated Comboyne 64-4 to help halfback Stephen Martin celebrate his 200th game for the club in their Hastings League clash on the weekend.

The Dragons were never in doubt for this contest given the significance of Martin’s influence over the club.

With a half time score of 16-4 following tries to Dragons players Garry Moreman (10th minute and two conversions), Sean Christie (25th minute), and Jason Costigan (27th minute) and a Tigers try to centre Shane Gregory five minutes from the break the match was virtually over.

The second half was all the Dragons who put on eight tries.

These went to five eighth Shane Franklin in the 51st and 64th minutes, Josh Henry in the 54th and 73rd, Leith Costigan in the 56th minute, Robbie Costigan in the 62nd minute, Jason Morrison in the 69th minute and Sean Christie in the 79th minute.

Franklin booted eight conversions in the 64-4 victory.

In the tackling department, Martin led the way with 33, Josh Henry 20, and Keith Hollis and Stephen Robbon 19 tackles each.

In the hit ups, Hollis continued to do the hard yards with 19, Jason Costigan 14 and Garry Moreman and Nigel McKenna 13 each.

Martin picked up the players player award while the club’s best and fairest points went to Jason Costigan 3, Leith Costigan 2 and Shane Franklin and Keith Hollis 1 each.

Kendall overcame an improving Beechwood to win their Hastings League clash 26-14 on the weekend.

The Blues opened the scoring in just the 6th minute when Nick Christenson crossed for an unconverted try to lead 4-0.

This was doubled just two minutes later when Drew Bartlett scored a neat try.

Five minutes later, the Blues made it 12-0 when Drew Gunning got over the try line and a big score and big win looked ominous.

But the Shamrocks dug deep and Jamie Donovan and Quintin Paine scored unconverted tries in the 17th and 38th minute to go into the break 12-8 in favour of Kendall.

The second half was a great tussle with both teams looking for the early advantage.

Kendalls’ Gunning was able to get over the tryline in the 8th minute but a Matt Blackwell try and Amos conversion left the scoreline at 16-14 after 11 minutes.

Christenson confirmed his standing in the Kendall team with a try in the 18th minute and although the conversion was not successful, the Blues had extended their lead to 20-14.

With the game in the balance and the Shamrocks just a converted try from drawing the contest, it was the Blues who came away with the points when Roberts scored the winner. The conversion was successful leaving the final score at 26-14.

The players’ player award went to Ryan Saric.
